Jeremiah, Chapter 3

INTRODUCTION:
God's message, through the prophet Jeremiah, to the Southern Kingdom of Judah, using a historic recitation of God's former dealings with the Northern Kingdom of Israel as an illustrated example to Judah, continues from Jeremiah, Chapter 2.

Here - God asks, and answers, retorically:

Verse 1 - Human society knows that, if a man divorces his wife, and she leaves him, and becomes another mans wife, shall the first man ever have her as a wife again? If men did this sort of thing in great numbers, would not the morals and customs of society be debased and corrupted? But you, Northern Kingdom of Israel, have played the spiritual harlot with many spiritual lovers; idols, images and pagan heathen gods!; yet, because you are spiritually married to Me, I want you to return again to Me, your first spiritual husband, The True and Living God.

Commentary:
Then God further recounts what He had once said to the Northern Kingdom of Israel:

Verse 2 - Consider your pagan heathen altars atop all the mountians and hills, and then try to locate ANY mountian or hill where you have NOT committed spiritual adultery. Consider the strange ways you have spiritually served, honored and adored your false gods, your substitute deities, in the same way as the pagan, heathen Arabs serve their idols in the Arabian wilderness; and consider that you have debased and corrupted the morals and customs of your society with your spiritual whoredoms and with your spiritual wickedness.

Verse 3 - This spiritual adultery on your part is why I have withheld the daily rain showers, and this is why there has been no agriculturally important Springtime rainy season; and, in spite of this display of My power in disciplining you, you stand-fast with the furrowed brow of a bold and brazen harlot, refusing to be ashamed of your spiritual adultery.

Commentary:
Then God recounts His mocking of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, asking:

Verse 4 - Now, in these times of trouble, won't you begin to remember Me (your first spiritual husband) and won't you begin to raise up your collective voices, crying "ABBA, Father God, only you are the teacher, guide and Lord from my younger and more spiritually innocent days"?

Commentary:
God further mocks the Northern Kingdom of Israel, asking if they would have then said:

Verse 5 - "Can we escape God's wrathful judgement completely, can we avoid God's immediate punishment and suffer it at some far future time"? (Then God declares to the Northern Kingdom of Israel:) Look! You have spoken and done evil spiritual things because you have free will to choose your paths and your ways.

Commentary:
Jeremiah's 2nd message to the the Southern Kingdom of Judah begins here - through the end of Chapter 6. The Lord, God, now speaking conversationally to the Prophet Jeremiah, in the days of the good King Josiah in Judah, is speaking about His former dealings with the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

Here - God asks:

Verse 6 - Have you seen what spiritually and religiously backsliding Israel has done? Collectively, Israel has gone up to pagan heathen altars on top of every mountain and hill and also has gathered at pagan heathen altars within what they imagine are spiritually significant groves of trees, and in those places which they falsely think are holy they engage in spiritual harlotry with pagan heathen idols.

Commentary:
The Lord, God, still speaking conversationally to the Prophet Jeremiah, continues, saying:

Verse 7 - And I, God, said to the Northern Kingdom of Israel, through the prophet Amos and through the other prophets, after Israel had collectively done all these spiritually evil things, "Turn, Israel, back unto Me, your God, your first spiritual husband". But Israel neither listened to the prophets nor did she spiritually return to her God. And the cunningly secretive Southern Kingdom of Judah observed all these things.

Verse 8 - And I, God, observed, when all the selfish and sensual motivations that had enticed the Northern Kingdom of Israel to collectively drift away from Me and commit spiritual adultery against Me, causing Me to divorce her; that the cunningly secretive Southern Kingdom of Judah learned nothing from Israel's shocking example and fearlessly engaged in spiritual harlotry also.

Verse 9 - Eventually, because of the Northern Kingdom of Israel's complete openness, shameless excess and the absence of restraint in committing spiritual whoredom against Me, the morals and customs of that entire society were debased and corrupted, so that it was evident to all that Israel openly committed spiritual adultery with large, tall, upright, easy to see, carved stone and carved wooden idols or images.

Verse 10 - And in spite of the fact that all of the evil things done by the Northern Kingdom of Israel are fully known, the cunningly secretive Southern Kingdom of Judah has learned nothing and has NOT spiritually returned to ME, but only pays Me lip-service as an outward pretence of righteousness.

Verse 11 - The spiritually debauched Northern Kingdom of Israel has made an openly complete departure from Me while the Southern Kingdom of Judah attempts to cunningly depart from Me in secret.

Commentary:
The Lord, God, commands the Prophet Jeremiah, saying:

Verse 12 - Go to the Northern Kingdom of Israel and admonish them, return to God you spiritual adulterers and God will lighten-up on His current anger over your spiritual evils, God is full of mercy and if you collectively repent God will not determine to punish you forever.

Commentary:
God's message through the prophet continues:

Verse 13 - But, first, confess your spiritual sins, confess that you have ignored and broken My commandments and Law, confess that you have spiritually dissapated yourselves with pagan heathen idols, images and strange gods at altars you falsely percieve to be holy because they are spiritually connected to trees and nature, and confess that you have failed to obey My voice repeatedly delivered to you through My prophets.

Verse 14 - Return, you who are unaware of the gravity of your actions, like unlearned children; I am your spiritual husband: And I will take those of you who will return unto Me to eternal spiritual salvation:

Verse 15 - And I will furnish you with preachers, ministers and pastors who are men after mine own heart, and those men shall fill you up with all spiritual knowledge and all spiritual understanding.

Verse 16 - When, in that state of salvation, those of you who had returned unto Me have seen your population burgeon, during the millennial kingdom reign of Messiah, there will be no more reference to the Ark Of The Covenant, for the old earthly form of worship will have been done away.

Verse 17 - During the millennial kingdom reign of Messiah, Jerusalem is where His throne will be; and saved souls representing all the nations will be there also, with the name of the Lord on their lips; and no saved soul will ever be tempted to engage in the former spiritually evil and worthless practices of serving or honoring idols and images.

Verse 18 - During the millennial kingdom reign of Messiah, the currently divided nation of Israel will be reunited, and as one nation they will return from their northern exile, returning to eretz Israel, the land of the covenants.

Verse 19 - How will I accomplish this, insert you among the other believers, admit you into the Promised Land, which is promised to the saved souls who enter into the millennial kingdom reign of Messiah? I know, you shall again call Me ABBA, my Father, God; and you shall not turn-away from Me unto idols and images ever again.

Verse 20 - Just like when a wife cunningly, secretly and with malice aforethought plays the whore in departing from her legitimate husband, you, Northern Kingdom of Israel, have played the spiritual harlot with many spiritual lovers; idols, images and pagan heathen gods!;

Commentary:
God's message through the prophet continues, with God lamenting:

Verse 21 - From Heaven I heard the crying and the begging of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, for they have forgotten how to properly pray to Me: For they have debased and corrupted the morals and customs of their society with their spiritual perversities, and this spiritual perverseness had led them far from the Lord their God.

Commentary:
God's message through the prophet continues, with this admonition:

Verse 22 - Come back to Me, your God, you spiritually ignorant little children who are going in the wrong religious way, and I will forgive your spiritual sins and re-acquaint you with righteous spirituality. (And God suggests a reply to His admonition. Israel is to say:) Look! We are returning to you; for you are our Lord, the One True God, The Father Almighty.

Commentary:
God's message through the prophet continues, with Israel being encouraged to reply thusly:

Verse 23 - We are truly wasting our time seeking salvation at pagan heathen altars, for there is no genuine salvation found at the pagan heathen altars on the high hills and mountains: For our Lord, the One True God, The Father Almighty, is our true salvation.

Verse 24 - For all our lives, the economic and social success of our ancestors is meaningless because of our's and our ancestor's shameful spiritual debauchery; and this shameful spiritual debauchery has affected everyone and everything.

Verse 25 - We faint when we realize we have forgotten how to properly approach God, we are so spiritually confused by idols and images that we wear confusion as a garment that both identifies us and also weighs us down with spiritual burdens too heavy to bear: For we have spiritually sinned against the Lord, God, The Father Almighty, both we and our ancestors, all our lives, even now, and we have ignored God's commandments and Law.
